The True Cost of Food Waste - Brits Bin Huge Amounts of Nutrients Every Day

British family could boost their diets with more than 60 tonnes of additional vitamins, minerals and other nutrients annually by reducing food waste, Nutrient rich potatoes, bread and milk amongst the lost foods. Sainsbury’s research shows that protein is the most wasted nutrient

British homes waste more than 4.2 million tonnes of good food every year – meaning masses of vital nutrients are being binned rather than helping to improve the health of the nation.
Annual food waste reports regularly reveal the quantity of food discarded each year, and the financial impact – most recently reported as £700 a year per family.2  However, new research today from Sainsbury’s uncovers a further hidden cost of this food waste - the 60 tonnes of vital vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are binned annually.

The Sainsbury’s research – released to support the launch of its new waste campaign ‘…to the rescue’ - shows potatoes, bread and milk are among the UK’s most thrown away foods with WRAP data indicating that 1.65million tonnes are binned every year of these three foods alone:

Annually, 733,000 tonnes of potatoes are chucked, equating to enough potassium to feed 140,000 people their daily recommendations (Nutrient Reference Value) for an entire week; the equivalent of the entire population of Blackpool.

Protein is the most wasted nutrient with 55 tonnes thrown in the bin every year.

Fibre commonly found in fruit and vegetables, is among the top binned food component with carrots being one of the most thrown away fibre providers, with every 80g portion of discarded carrots equates to 2.6g of fibre.

Some 353million litres of milk also goes down the drain annually, losing essential calcium, crucial for bones and teeth.

Sainsbury’s wants to help customers to make small changes to their routine to make a big difference to their food waste footprint. As part of the ‘…to the rescue’ campaign, recipes and handy tips, such as storing potatoes in the cupboard rather than the fridge, have been created to help people reduce their food waste.

Annie Denny, Sainsbury’s nutritionist, comments:
“We’re all guilty of throwing away lots of key nutrients that help keep our bones, immune system and nervous system healthy – all vital to helping us stay well. By making the most of our food, we can all go a long way to ensuring we’re not just saving money but also letting those key nutrients to do their jobs.”

Paul Crewe, Head of Sustainability at Sainsbury’s, comments:
“Throwing away food is often associated with wasting money, but our research published today as part of our ‘…to the rescue’ campaign shows there is also a wider nutritional issue. Our simple tips for saving the most frequently thrown away foods, along with our recipes for leftovers have been created to help reduce food waste and benefit the health of UK families. None of Sainsbury’s food waste goes to landfill and any surplus food fit for human consumption is donated to charities.”

Three handy tips to help reduce food waste

- Keep all fruit in the fridge except pineapples and bananas which are happier in the fruit bowl
- Keep leftover salad in a bowl and add a sheet of kitchen roll before topping with cling film
- Shake and freeze bread to stop the slices sticking together

Leerdammer Toastie and Burger - BBQ Tips and Recipes

We love Leerdammer cheese and was delighted to know that Leerdammer has a new Toastie and Burger range,Toastie and Burger is a much more creamier cheese which makes it the perfect filling for a toasted cheese sandwich or even better a BBQ burger. So as barbecue season upon us, Leerdammer has teamed up with Darragh O’Shea, owner of the renowned O’Shea’s Butchers in London, to give his top tips to make sure any barbecue you host goes off without a hitch.

Darragh O’Shea’s Top BBQ Tips

• Set-up – make sure the marinating of the meat is done 24 hours prior to cooking to enhance the flavours you want to create. Once marinated leave in the fridge
• Light the barbecue before guests arrive – your guests will arrive to either the smell of meat being cooked or the sound of the barbecue. I always recommend using a coal barbecue, as it allows for the best cooking conditions and provides a fantastic taste. Make sure you allow longer for a charcoal barbeque to heat, approximately 40 minutes
• Ensure that your coals are ready to cook on – the coals need to be glowing red with a powdery grey surface before you start cooking, this will mean that they are hot enough to cook on
• Allow the meat slightly to warm before cooking – take the meat out of the fridge around an hour before you cook it, bringing it to room temperature. This will make sure it cooks faster, with the meat just below the surface not being overcooked
• Be organised – especially around the barbecue. Keep cooked meat away from raw and make sure that all utensils are also kept separate
• Use the best possible ingredients – ensure the meat is of a high quality, check it is organic, free range or from a reputable source. Make sure you have exciting salads, cheese and vegetables to go alongside what you are barbecuing
• Don’t be afraid to include extras – on your meat such as cheese which is a great accompaniment to any barbecue. I would recommend Leerdammer® Toastie and Burger which is natural, thick and creamy sliced cheese
• Stay with the barbecue – to ensure the food is properly cooked and that nothing gets burnt
• Move the meat – if you can, have different racks that allow meat to be moved off the main barbecue when they are cooked, this will ensure they are kept warm and more importantly allows you to rest the meat. You can also place the food in foil
• Check the meat is cooked – use a knife and fork to cut into the meat to test that it has been cooked properly and use a meat thermometer to assess the desired temperature
• Rest the meat – leaving the meat to rest once it has been cooked allows it to absorb the juices, and will be more tender.

With these amazing tips in mind why not head over to Leerdammer/recipes for more barbecue inspiration, Leerdammer has also created this burger recipe below.

Leerdammer Beef Burger with Avocado

Ingredients
400g extra lean minced beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 tsp mixed dried herbs
2 tbsp HP® BBQ sauce
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 slices Leerdammer ® Toastie & Burger
1 large ripe avocado
100g reduced fat crème fraiche
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 burger buns, split
Mixed leaves and sliced tomatoes, to serve.

Serves: 4
Instructions:
1. Preheat the barbecue or grill.
2. Mix together the minced beef, onion, mixed herbs and HP® BBQ sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Fold each slice of Leerdammer cheese in half, then in half again to make roughly a square. Make the burgers by forming a quarter of the meat mixture around each square of cheese, so that it is completely enclosed.
3. Barbecue or grill the burgers for 8-10 minutes, turning once.
4. While the burgers are cooking, peel and stone the avocado and mash the flesh with a fork, then mix it with the crème fraiche. Season.
5. Toast the burger buns on the cut sides. Top with the mixed leaves, sliced tomatoes and burgers. Serve with a dollop of the avocado mixture.

Leerdammer Toastie and Burger is the perfect accompaniment to any barbecue this summer.

I was given some Leerdammer Toastie to try, All thoughts and opinions are that of my own,

Tassimo - A Cup Of Kindness

Forget the fuss: all dads want is a cup of kindness for Father’s Day

Tassimo uncovers how material gifts are a thing of the past and all dads really want is a catch up over a cuppa

London, 18 June 2015: With father’s day just around the corner, nearly three quarters (70%) of children are splashing the cash on flashy gifts, despite a whopping 85% of fathers revealing that all they really want is a card and a catch up over a cuppa with their child on this special day.

In new research by Tassimo showed nearly a third of kids (28%) believe their dads would most like to receive a bottle of alcohol, closely followed by a gadget (22%) and tickets to football match (17%), neither which come cheap! Dads however just don’t care for these flashy things with 35% hoping for a visit from their child so they can catch up over a cuppa or even a simple phone call or text (33%) that shows that their kid is thinking of them.

When it comes to choosing the perfect gift kids are on average spending more than two hours and outlaying around £35 on their dads. However, regardless of their efforts their old man thinks that they are spending half of that with an average believing their children splashes out only around £18 on their present!

Staying in with the family is also the new going out as nearly two-fifths (37%) of dad’s revealed that their ideal father’s day is spent enjoying quality time with their child at home. A third of kids (33%) however believe their dad would most like to go out for lunch or dinner with family and friends; with a quarter (25%) thinking they’d enjoy a lie-in with breakfast in bed.

The study, carried out by leading hot beverage brewer company Tassimo, also revealed which topics make Britons most likely to turn to their father for a bit of advice, showing that dad really does know best. Six in ten Britons said that they go to their father to discuss finances, with a similar percentage turning to him for careers advice. Over one in five daughters, compared to sons (14%), are however more likely to confide in dad when it comes to friendships, though dads rule the roost for nearly a quarter of sons (24%) when seeking relationship advice. Perhaps unsurprisingly, only 3% thought that father knows best when it comes to fashion!

Toby Bevans, Brand Manager at Tassimo said “We’ve always believed that some of the most precious moments people share are over a cuppa and it’s nice to see that this is exactly what dads want this father’s day. Many good conversations happen over a hot drink and as the research has confirmed spending time with kids and doing so over a cuppa is clearly the best way to your dad’s heart. With Tassimo, kids can now also offer their dads something that gives them a wide range of delicious drinks for them to enjoy together.”

Tassimo stocks a range of gifts including hot drinks brewers, accessories and a delicious range of beverages from the likes of Costa, Twinings, Cadbury, Oreo and more. So for dads that are notoriously difficult to shop for, as many seem to have everything, kids are sure to find something from Tassimo that will hit the spot.  You can find out more at www.tassimo.co.uk.
